Traditional Japanese washi paper is playing a key role in restoration work on Michelangelo’s masterpiece “The Last Judgment”. The gigantic fresco adorns the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel, which is also known as the site of the conclave, the secret meeting held to elect a new Roman Catholic pope.
The restoration project began last month. It is the first such work on the painting in about 30 years. Scaffolding has been set up inside the chapel and is covered by screens bearing large printed images of the artwork.
Behind the screens, workers soak pieces of washi paper in water and apply them to the surface of the fresco to remove surface deposits. Washi paper is soft and highly absorbent, allowing it to draw out the deposits without damaging the painting. The chapel remains open to visitors during the work. The project is scheduled to be completed in April.

Japan and Canada have agreed to launch a bilateral economic security dialogue partly to strengthen supply chains for critical minerals. The agreement was reached on Friday, March 6th, during a meeting in Tokyo between Japan’s Minister Takaichi Sanae and her visiting Canadian counterpart Mark Carney.
At the start of their talks, Takaichi said the two countries share basic values such as freedom, democracy, and the rule of law. She said the importance of the relationship has never been greater in light of the current international situation. Carney said we both know the importance of economic security for national security because the world is at a turning point. We are seeing its manifestation in the Middle East.
The two leaders said in a joint statement their countries would build a comprehensive strategic partnership. They also said the new economic security dialogue will cover topics such as artificial intelligence and quantum technology as well as supply chains for critical minerals.
