Japan will deploy an anti-ship missile system on its easternmost island for the first time.
The deployment will take place as early as June. It is the latest move by the country to boost defenses on its Pacific side.
Minamitorishima island is located about 2,000 kilometers southeast of Honshu. The defense ministry plans to build a firing range on the island for the Ground Self-Defense Force’s Type 12 surface-to-ship missiles.
These have a range of over 100 kilometers. The deployment would include a launcher, mid-sized drones used to pinpoint targets, and a system to gather and analyze radio waves emitted by vessels.
The missiles themselves will not be part of the deployment. The ministry plans to use the equipment to confirm whether the system can function normally on the island.

The U.S. space agency NASA says it intends to invest $20 billion over the next seven years to build a base on the moon. It is also suspending plans to construct a new space station.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman announced the agency’s revised plans for the U.S.-led Artemis program on Tuesday. NASA intends to land humans on the moon in 2028.
Isaacman says the agency will focus on building the lunar base while pausing plans for the new Gateway space station. The Gateway was to serve as a staging point for the transportation of humans and supplies to build a future moon base.
“The goal is not flags and footprints. This time we’re going to stay,” providing a “demand signal” for frequent exploration.
He says NASA is now focusing on infrastructure that supports sustained operations on the lunar surface.

Traditional Japanese washi paper is playing a key role in restoration work on Michelangelo’s masterpiece “The Last Judgment”.
The gigantic fresco adorns the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel, which is also known as the site of the conclave, the secret meeting held to elect a new Roman Catholic Pope.
The restoration project began last month. It is the first such work on the painting in about 30 years.
Scaffolding has been set up inside the chapel and is covered by screens bearing large printed images of the artwork.
Behind the screens, workers soak pieces of washi paper in water and apply them to the surface of the fresco to remove surface deposits.
Washi paper is soft and highly absorbent, allowing it to draw out the deposits without damaging the painting.
The chapel remains open to visitors during the work. The project is scheduled to be completed in April.

NHK has learned that Japan’s transport ministry has asked airlines to ensure they stick to scheduled departure times for domestic flights.
The first-ever request for concrete measures comes as on-time departures have fallen to their lowest level on record.
The ministry says 84 percent of domestic flights took off within 15 minutes of their scheduled departure times in fiscal 2024.
The rate was higher in 2015 at 91 percent. It has fallen since, excluding the coronavirus outbreak.
The ministry says the figure has dropped partly due to a rise in inbound passengers and downsized planes. This has led to congested schedules.
Officials are asking airlines to take steps to correct the issue. These include creating more realistic flight schedules and stricter boarding calls for passengers.
