Japan and Canada have agreed to launch a bilateral economic security dialogue, partly to strengthen supply chains for critical minerals.
The agreement was reached on Friday in Tokyo during a meeting between Japan’s Economic Security Minister Takaichi Sanae and her visiting Canadian counterpart, Mary Ng.
At the start of their meeting, Takaichi said the two countries share fundamental values, such as freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.
She said the importance of Japan-Canada relations has never been greater in light of the current international situation.
Ng said, “We both know, as you just mentioned, the importance of economic security for the security of our citizens because the world is at a turning point. We see the manifestations in the Middle East.”
The two ministers said in a joint statement that their two countries will build a comprehensive strategic partnership.
They also said a new economic security dialogue will cover topics such as artificial intelligence and quantum technology as well as supply chains for critical minerals.

Japanese trucking firms are feeling the pinch at the pump as the intensifying conflict in the Middle East limits fuel supplies.
Nobu Sangyo, a trucking firm based in Kobe, western Japan, buys wholesale diesel fuel and fills the tanks of roughly 200 trucks on its premises.
But the bill from the wholesaler has no deliveries scheduled for the next few weeks.
An executive at the firm says, “We order the same amount for every week, but the blanks in the bill mean that orders can’t be placed. Canceling orders will require us to refuel our vehicles at regular gas stations.”
The executive said the company is now facing a nearly 40 percent rise in its monthly fuel bill. Higher diesel prices are also adding to the costs.
Transport Minister Saito Tetsuo said he aims to address such cases and draft appropriate measures.

Japan’s government has approved a draft amendment to immigration-related legislation that would introduce a new online platform to streamline entry checks for visitors from overseas.
The approval came at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
The draft revision says the Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorization, or JESTA, will be introduced by the end of March 2029.
Visitors from some 70 countries and regions exempted from short-term visas for tourism and other purposes will be eligible for online immigration checks under the system prior to leaving for Japan.
The system is aimed at streamlining immigration procedures as well as preventing foreign nationals who have plans to overstay in Japan from entering the country.
The draft revision also says that current fees for obtaining residence permits in Japan will be raised during the next fiscal year starting in April.
